White Sands National Monument is one of the most stunning and unique places to see in the United States. The beauty of this geographic wonder was so awe inspiring that in 1933 then President Herbert Hoover declared the location a national monument. It is such a visually unique place because the sand in this area is made up of gypsum. Gypsum is rarely found in sand form because it dissolves with water and washes up into the nearest reservoir. Because the White Sands are located in a basin area the water soluble Gypsum stays in a constant element of sand, which gives the area its unique look year around. The White Sands National Monument offers hiking, photography, sand play and other recreational activities that are sure to make your trip to New Mexico Memorable.
