Multi-day Tour of the Missions of the Southwest
Duration 5 Days
Departs from: Albuquerque, NM
This tour offers a chance to take a big step back in time and travel in Coronado's footsteps. Feel what it is like to stand in 400 year old Missions that marked the blending and mixing of two very different civilizations.
Description
The Spanish expeditions of the 1500's were launched for two reasons, the pursuit of either gold or souls. The latter of these journeys is the basis of our Missions of the Southwest tour.
Details
- Day 1: With an early start in Albuquerque, we explore Acoma Pueblo, Zuni Mission and the 1500's Spanish graffiti at El Morro National Monument. The Acoma Pueblo is one of the oldest continuously inhabited communities in the United States, at over 2000 years! Perched atop a sandstone butte, this remote pueblo commands 360 degree views of the surrounding semi-desert landscape. Dinner and overnight are in Albuquerque.
- Day 2: Today starts with a tram ride to the towering Sandia Peaks that shadow Albuquerque. The view from the top is like reading a map of the city. As we leave town via the Turquoise Trail we stop for a visit to the eclectic artistic town of Madrid on our way to our overnight stay in Santa Fe.
- Day 3: Today is a flexible day in Santa Fe with options like Bandalier National Monument or a stroll in the streets of Santa Fe for shopping, dining and art galleries. A popular choice is the Loretto Chapel and its famous spiral staircase. Dinner and overnight in Santa Fe.
- Day 4: The sublime and mystic healing mission at Chamayo and the Las Trampas mission await us along the old road to Taos. The afternoon finds us in Taos for the Taos Pueblo and the Kit Carson Museum with time for shopping and exploring with an overnight stay in Taos.
- Day 5:Today we have a last chance to get the most out of Taos and it's many pleasant surprises before returning to Albuquerque via Santa Fe by 4:00 pm.
